Improving The Odds - Explained

The easiest way to improve your odds in any lottery or draw is to enter more often. In principle, if you could select all possible combinations of numbers then you would be guaranteed to win. Of course, you could do that with the national lottery but it would cost you a fortune just to enter (it would also take a long time to fill out all the entry forms!). However, it's interesting to note that someone did use this method for a lottery in America and they did actually win!

So let's take a look at how this lottery syndicate system works. We'll look at how it works for the UK Lotto draw which has 49 balls.

You play in a syndicate with 44 other people. You don't need to recruit these people, that's done for you. Each person in the syndicate is allocated 6 numbers, 5 numbers which are the same as the numbers allocated to all the other syndicate members plus one number which is unique to them. Let's suppose, just as an example that you are allocated the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 as your "common" syndicate numbers. The syndicate entries would look like the example below:

 You (Member 1) 1 2 3 4 5 6
 Member 2 1 2 3 4 5
 Member 3 1 2 3 4 5 8
 Member 4 1 2 3 4 5 9
 Member 5 1 2 3 4 5 10
 Member 6 1 2 3 4 5 11
 Member 7 1 2 3 4 5 12
 Member 8 1 2 3 4 5 13
 Member 9 1 2 3 4 5 14
 Member 10 1 2 3 4 5 15
 Member 11 1 2 3 4 5 16
 Member 12 1 2 3 4 5 17
 Member 13 1 2 3 4 5 18
 Member 14 1 2 3 4 5 19
 Member 15 1 2 3 4 5 20
 Member 16 1 2 3 4 5 21
 Member 17 1 2 3 4 5 22
 Member 18 1 2 3 4 5 23
 Member 19 1 2 3 4 5 24
 Member 20 1 2 3 4 5 25
 Member 21 1 2 3 4 5 26
 Member 22 1 2 3 4 5 27
 Member 23 1 2 3 4 5 28
 Member 24 1 2 3 4 5 29
 Member 25 1 2 3 4 5 30
 Member 26 1 2 3 4 5 31
 Member 27 1 2 3 4 5 32
 Member 28 1 2 3 4 5 33
 Member 29 1 2 3 4 5 34
 Member 30 1 2 3 4 5 35
 Member 31 1 2 3 4 5 36
 Member 32 1 2 3 4 5 37
 Member 33 1 2 3 4 5 38
 Member 34 1 2 3 4 5 39
 Member 35 1 2 3 4 5 40
 Member 36 1 2 3 4 5 41
 Member 37 1 2 3 4 5 42
 Member 38 1 2 3 4 5 43
 Member 39 1 2 3 4 5 44
 Member 40 1 2 3 4 5 45
 Member 41 1 2 3 4 5 46
 Member 42 1 2 3 4 5 47
 Member 43 1 2 3 4 5 48
 Member 44 1 2 3 4 5 49

Okay, as you can see you have 44 entries for your syndicate. You've increased your chances by entering more often. Great.

You can also see that, because of the way each syndicate member is allocated one of the 44 numbers which don't appear in the 5 shared numbers that you are guaranteed to match at least one ball in each draw. Okay so far?

What probably isn't obvious is the impact that these two facts have on your chances of winning. Statistically speaking, using this system, you are 702% more likely to win the jackpot than if you entered by buying a ticket at the local postoffice, supermarket or corner store.

Which is great - but leads us, rather neatly I think, onto one of the main problems with lottery syndicates: You need to share your winnings with the other 43 members. Sharing your winnings with the other syndicate members is the downside of any lottery syndicate. It's the price you pay for getting more entries while keeping your costs down.

Now I can see how you might think that having to share your winnings with 43 other people could make it a bit of a hollow victory by reducing your share to a pittance. That's where the third point kicks in - because of the way the numbers are selected, when you do win the chances are that you will win on more than one line. It's a multi-win system. Because of this, you will actually tend to win more when you win than if you were playing alone - even although you do have to share the winnings with the other syndicate members.
